Overview of the Navy :

-- Mission Statement for the Navy:

The mission of the Navy is to maintain, train and equip combat-ready Naval forces capable of winning wars, deterring aggression and maintaining freedom of the seas.

-- The Navy was first established in June 1775, and went active in October 1775 under commander-in-chief George Washington and it became the first navy governmentally established in the western hemisphere. There are 2 major time periods in which the Navy is broken into: They are the "Old Navy, 1775-1880's" and the "New Navy, 1880's to present day". It is concluded that the US Navy is the most powerful Navy in the world.

The Navy is deemed to be the sea serivce in the United States. There is roughly more than 380 ships in operation that are under the US flag, which is greater than the numbers and sizes of the 10 ranked navies below them combined!
