Overview of the Marine Corps :

-- The US Marine Corps can trace its history all the way back to 1775, where they first stood as 2 battalions. They were first called the Continental Marines. Today, they are known as the Marine Corps, and they are the smallest military branch under the direction of the Department of Defense. They are a seperate but are part of the US Navy. There are more than 200,000 active Marines in the service, and another 40,000 Marines in the reserves.

-- Semper Fidelis has been the motto of the Marine Corps since 1883, latin for "Always Faithful" it is a reminder for the Marines to remain vigilant and faithful to both their fellow brother Marines and the task at which they are charged with. The Marine boot camp is the longest of any branches basic training, lasting 13 weeks.

-- A Marine is first a riflesman, that is the first thing that they are taught, while they may have a different MOS (military occupational speciality) every Marine is trained to be infantry first.
